The purpose of the Freedom to Vote Act is to ensure that voters in West Virginia and Texas and North Carolina and Montana and California and Oregon and Georgia, etc. are all treated essentially the same and that no voter faces unreasonable barriers in Federal elections.

John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

The VRAA amends the Voting Rights Act of 1965 as needed to address the harm done by recent decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS). The VRAA establishes new criteria for determining which states and political subdivisions must obtain preclearance before changes to voting practices may take effect.

Redistricting

Every 10 years, after completion of the U.S. Census and allocation of 435 Congressional seats among the states, state legislatures (or independent commissions, in some states other than WV) use the new population data to re-draw the boundaries of Congressional and state legislative districts.

This year’s session of the Legislature began January 12, 2022.  During the breakneck 60-day session, the League follows bills related to our legislative priorities, educates members and the public, testifies at public hearings, and advocates directly with legislators and their constituents to influence the bills that are introduced and voted on.

We are a nonpartisan volunteer organization working to promote civic responsibility through informed and active participation.

The League is proud to be nonpartisan, neither supporting nor opposing candidates or political parties at any level of government, but always working on vital issues of concern to members and the public.

The League:

  • Encourages informed and active participation in government.
  • Influences public policy through education and advocacy.
  • Educates to increase understanding of major policy issues.
